When does your Surface support life cycle end? Will it get fixed?

Time was you could go to Microsoft’s website and get a definitive answer as to when your Surface machine’s support life cycle would end. For reasons unknown, that information isn’t where it used to be. It’s an open question whether Microsoft has unilaterally withdrawn support — a particularly important question, given the ultimate availability of Meltdown/Spectre patches.

Let’s say you have a Surface Pro 2 and you want to know if Microsoft will ever fix the Meltdown/Spectre vulnerability on your machine. To date, there’s been no notification one way or the other, but the tea leaves look increasingly bitter.

Mingis on Tech: 2018 and the Blockchain bubble

If 2017 was the year blockchain swept the tech industry with the potential to disrupt a variety of verticals — FinTech, healthcare and shipping – 2018 is already shaping up to be the breakout year for the distributed ledger technology.

Case in point: Maersk and IBM announced earlier this month that they’ve joined forces to create a new company focused on building a blockchain-based electronic shipping platform. According to Maersk, the platform would effectively supplant an archaic system that now relies on legacy technology, and paper, to track shipments around the world – something that could save billions of dollars.

A new way to save time with text message templates on Android

If you know anything about me, you know that I’m all about saving time and making tech more efficient. And one thing that can always use a potent productivity booster-shot is the act of inputting text from our mobile devices.

Déjà vu? Don’t worry: You aren’t losing your mind. (Well, OK, you might be. But not on account of this, at least.) We’ve indeed talked about the time wasted with smartphone text input before — not that long ago, in fact, when we were getting into the subject of macros and advanced text substitution. As of this week, though, there’s an even easier way to create and use templates for common phone-based responses, and it’s built right into one of my favorite messaging apps.
